Why You’re Not Getting Doula Clients (It’s Not Your Experience)

The Real Reason You’re Not Getting Doula Inquiries

Spoiler Alert: It Has Nothing to Do With Your Skills

If you’re a doula wondering how to get more clients, it’s easy to assume the problem is your experience.

Maybe you’ve thought:

  • “I need one more certification…”

  • “I should get more training before I really put myself out there…”

  • “I’m just not confident enough yet…”

And honestly? That makes sense.

This is deeply personal work. Of course you want to feel qualified. And I WANT you to BE qualified. If you’ve taken a doula training, you are qualified to go out and work as a doula.

But here’s the honest truth most doulas don’t realize:

You’re probably not struggling to get clients because of your skills.
You’re struggling because potential clients can’t find you.

The Belief That’s Keeping You Stuck

Many doulas believe that more training = more clients.

But if that were true, every highly trained doula would be fully booked.

And that’s just not what we see unfortunately.

There are doulas with multiple certifications who are barely getting inquiries…
And there are doulas with less experience who are consistently booked.

So what’s the difference?

It’s not skill.

It’s visibility.

What Actually Happens When a Client Is Looking for a Doula

When a pregnant person decides they want doula support, they don’t start by asking:

“Who has the most certifications?”

They go to Google and search something like:

  • “doula near me”

  • “postpartum doula in [their city]”

  • “birth doula support near me”

From there, they:

  1. Click on a few websites

  2. Quickly scan for clarity and connection

  3. Decide who feels like the right fit

  4. Reach out to 1–3 doulas

If you’re not showing up in that moment?

You’re not being considered at all.

You’re not getting passed over.
You’re just not being seen.

What Actually Brings Consistent Doula Inquiries

If you want consistent inquiries, you need to focus on one thing:

Being visible at the exact moment someone is looking for a doula.

That comes down to having:

1. A Website That Exists

You definitely won’t show up in Google searches if you don’t even have a website.

2. A Website That Can Be Found

If your site isn’t optimized for search (SEO), it won’t show up when people are looking either.

3. A Website That Builds Trust Quickly

When someone lands on your site, they need to immediately understand:

  • Who you help

  • Where you’re located

  • Why they should choose you

This isn’t about being the best doula.
It’s about being the most visible and easiest to trust online.

A Simple Shift That Changes Everything

Instead of asking:

“Am I experienced enough to get clients?”

Start asking:

“Can my ideal client actually find me when they’re searching?”

Because those are two very different problems.

And only one of them directly leads to inquiries.
