Creating Your Doula Logo -

What to Know Before you Choose

For doulas in the beginning stages of setting up their businesses, a logo can feel like one of the most daunting tasks.

It can be hard to find something that you feel like sums up your entire business in a small image.

But the good news is, a doula logo doesn’t have to do that!

Your logo should be a simple, easy to remember image that helps potential clients remember you and draws them in.

Read on for the advice I give doulas who are looking for the perfect logo!

Do I need a doula logo?

The answer to this is yes and no. To get your brand out there, you need a simple image that is easy to remember and can be replicated on all sorts of materials. For many people, this is an image used as a logo - for example, mine for my postpartum doula business, Dover Doula, is a green lotus flower that grows out of the “L” in doula.

But you can actually just use your headshot. By using that same image across all platforms, you create the same effect of a recognizable symbol, and people associate the image with your business. After all, as doulas, we are the business.

Where do I get a doula logo?

If you want to go the route of a unique image and/or font for your logo, there are a number of ways to get one. You can choose to make it yourself or outsource the work to a graphic designer.

Making a logo yourself doesn’t require a lot of graphic design know-how. Websites like Canva allow you to drag and drop elements and customize colors to quickly have your own logo. You can also transfer that image to a number of sizes and mediums, which makes it easy to manage your branding.

But you may also prefer to work with a designer so that you have that professional and polished look representing your doula business. You can find plenty of freelancers online, especially through websites like Fiverr. If you go this route, just make sure that you’re clear with them about what you need and get good quality images in a variety of sizes.

However, working with a graphic designer can be expensive.

Tips for creating a doula logo

  • Keep it simple!

This is the MOST important thing to keep in mind. A logo is meant to be easy to recognize - think of some of the most famous ones like the Nike swoosh, the Target bullseye, or the Apple apple. I see so many beautiful, intricate doula logos that are full of meaning, but they aren’t going to make the quick impression you need to. Think clean lines, common images, and eye-catching colors!

  • Think about sizing

Some images look great when they’re blown up on your computer screen, but think about where your logo will go. Business cards have very little area for a logo, and your new doula logo will probably be your profile photo on social media. Your logo should be easy to understand whether it’s the size of a fingernail or blown up on a car magnet.

  • Focus on personal, not unique

In trying to make a recognizable logo, some people create extremely intricate designs that are hard to understand. You obviously want your logo to be specific to you and represent your business in some way, but you don’t need to worry about it being extremely unique. Lots of doulas use lotus flowers, outlines of pregnant women, or other common symbols for a reason. Using these concepts and adding your own colors, formatting, and other personal touches is enough to make it your own.

Having an elegant logo that follows these tips will set your doula business apart from the competition AND establish you as a professional.
